Paul Scholes slams Marcus Rashford for 'being stupid' after Manchester United disciplinary issue

Former midfielder Paul Scholes has hailed Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag's honesty after making the decision to drop Marcus Rashford to the bench for Saturday lunchtime's clash with Wolves at Molineux.

Rashford, who scored his 10th goal of the season in all competitions against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening, has been axed from the starting line-up because of an 'internal disciplinary' issue. Details of what the attacker has done to warrant such discipline have not been confirmed.

The England international has been revitalised by Ten Hag this season, playing some of the best football he has produced in his career to date, as well as appearing generally happier and more confident. Nevertheless, he has been left out of the side to face Wolves, sparking questions about what has happened.

Regardless of what has happened, former Reds ace Scholes has praised Ten Hag for his decision, suggesting that it could possibly be because of 'lateness'. Ten Hag has set high standards from the outset of his reign at Old Trafford and has, on several occasions, made it clear who's boss.

"It's difficult to know the truth, really," Scholes told BT Sport. "Internal disciplinary, you think lateness.

"But I love him, the way he's honest, he's got the lad in the form of his life who will [be hoping to] play a big part today. He'd be coming into this game expecting to score goals and win the game. To stand by his guns, we'll see if it’s a wise decision."

Scholes then criticised Rashford and admitted he hopes the aforementioned disciplinary issues don't impact the form he has shown so far this season.

"He’s jeopardising his own form a little bit by being stupid or whatever he’s done wrong and the manager has seen it to take him out the team," he added. "But when he is on form, he’s looked so happy and if you look over the last 18 months, he’s looked miserable and hasn’t performed, could this jeopardise him going forward?

"He looks a bit miserable there [warming up] because he’s not playing but I hope it doesn’t jeopardise the next six months of the season.
