Paul Scholes slams Manchester United midfield pairing as three players singled out vs Everton

Here are your latest Manchester United morning headlines on Sunday, April 9.

Scholes slams 'McFred'

Paul Scholes said it is "almost a waste of time" having forward players in Manchester United's team with Fred and Scott McTominay starting together in midfield.

McTominay started a third straight Premier League game in Saturday's clash with Everton while Fred joined the returning Christian Eriksen on the bench after the Dane was named in a matchday squad for the first time since January.

Three Scholes standouts

Paul Scholes has heaped praise on Manchester United trio Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and Antony for their parts in the 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

Fernandes was United's standout player, relishing the deeper role in Casemiro's absence and orchestrating attacks from deep. The Portuguese maestro often found Antony flying through on goal after getting in behind Ben Godfrey, although the Brazilian's composure failed him.

Maguire was a surprise addition to the starting line-up, leading his side out for the first time in the league since mid-February. But the 30-year-old coped well with the physicality of a young Ellis Simms, doing his fair share to keep an all-important clean sheet.

Shirt number upgrades

Manchester United have one eye on the transfer window as Erik ten Hag maps out plans for next season.

Having allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to leave mid-campaign under controversial circumstances, United want to sign England captain Harry Kane as his long-term replacement as they, also, target a dynamic midfielder. Harry Maguire, Alex Telles and Anthony Martial are among those who could be sold.

With other outgoings on the horizon, too, there could be several alterations when it comes to shirt numbers; including the famous number 7 shirt vacated by Ronaldo upon his departure. Of course, incomings need to be accommodated, but Ten Hag could sanction upgrades for current squad members.
