Paul Scholes has slammed Fred for a 'stupid' decision he made in the build-up to Atletico Madrid's goal on Wednesday.
The hosts caught Manchester United cold last night when Joao Felix gave Atleti the lead inside seven minutes. United struggled to recover after going behind and were comfortably second best in the first half.
There was an improvement from the visitors in the second half and eventually pulled level thanks to an Anthony Elanga goal. United held out for the draw leaving the tie finally poised heading into the second leg at Old Trafford.
Scholes, speaking after the match on BT Sport, criticised United's Brazilian midfielder for attempting to close down Renan Lodi just before he crossed for the opener.
Fred slipped in his attempt which allowed Lodi to swing the ball into the box and onto Felix's head.
Scholes explained: "Fred, not just his slip, the way he goes out to the ball. There is no need to go out that quick.
"That’s where the erraticness of his game comes.
"Watch how quick he comes to the ball - he goes out stupidly, commits himself, then he slips and the lad just skips past him."
The return fixture between the two clubs takes place on Tuesday, March 15.
