Paul Scholes reiterates Manchester United quadruple claim after win over Barcelona

Former Manchester United star Paul Scholes has suggested that the Reds' quadruple quest is 'still on' after Erik ten Hag's men defeated Barcelona in their Europa League play off tie.

The Reds secured a 2-1 victory over the Catalan giants in their second leg tie at Old Trafford on Thursday night, which saw them win the tie 4-3 on aggregate after a 2-2 draw in Spain last week.

United went a goal down when Robert Lewandowski converted from the spot after Bruno Fernandes had conceded a penalty, but the home side responded well and levelled through Fred. It appeared as though the tie was edging towards extra-time, but substitute Antony scored a stunning goal to ensure the Reds' progression.

Ten Hag's side remain the only side in England still competing on all four fronts - with Premier League, Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Europa League success all a possibility this term. United face Newcastle on Sunday afternoon the EFL Cup final, hoping to win their first trophy since 2017.

Ex-United midfielder Scholes was full of praise for his former side after the victory over Barcelona - and the 48-year-old suggested that Ten Hag's men were capable of winning the quadruple this campaign.

"It’s still on," Scholes said on BT Sport. "I think out of the top five leagues in Europe we’re the only team in Europe who can still win the quadruple so it’s there. It’ll be difficult of course but who knows?"

Speaking about the win in general, he added: "Absolutely brilliant, that is what they wanted, this ground. This is what it’s known for - great atmospheres, big games, and this is a big game.

"Okay, it’s Europa League, it’s not the Champions League, but it’s still a major game. Over two games we’ve seen these two great clubs and two great goals win it tonight."

It is not the first time that Scholes has insisted that United are capable of winning four trophies. The BT Sport pundit claimed that the Reds could achieve the feat after the draw with Barcelona at Camp Nou last Thursday.
