Paul Scholes questions Man United transfer plan to sign 'next Frank Lampard' amid Chelsea issue

Paul Scholes has questioned whether Manchester United should sign Mason Mount this summer. The 24-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford since entering the final 12 months of his contract at Chelsea.

football.london understands that negotiations with Mount over a new deal have proven difficult thus far, with the proposed length of the extension and wage packet proving to be an issue. The England international is not among the top earners at Cobham despite racking up nearly 200 appearances for the club.

With Mauricio Pochettino expected to replace Frank Lampard in the coming weeks, football.london understands that the Argentine is an admirer of Mount and he could sway his decision. But, as it stands, Mount will become a free agent in June 2024 and, until then, he'll be available for a discounted price.

While United may be keen to sign the Englishman, Liverpool are believed to be long admirers. However, Scholes isn't so convinced by the £69.5million-rated ace, claiming Mount isn't scoring as many goals as he should be.

"Look, I like Mason Mount… does he do enough?" said the former Red Devils midfielder on Premier League Productions. "I thought when he first came onto the scene, ‘have got a new Frank Lampard?’

"I know we talked before about not comparing players to these types. But I expected him to score goals, a lot more goals, in big games, to win you games, he hasn’t really kicked on from there. I think a change of club might not be a bad thing for him."

Despite a disappointing season and a number of players expected to leave this summer, Scholes believes that there's a lot to look forward to for Pochettino – if he put pen to paper on a deal. The BT Sport pundit added: "I think if I was a new coach going into that [Chelsea] squad I’d be excited about what’s there. I think there’s a lot of real talent.

"I think he’s going to have to buy a couple of centre-halves, possibly a right-back, possibly a left-back, a whole new back four, I’m not sure about either goalkeeper.

"But I think going forward, I always look a team and I’m excited when they create chances, I think adding a centre-forward to that, they’re always going to create chances and if you’ve got a team who can score goals you’ve always got a chance."
