Paul Scholes praises ‘dangerous’ Alejandro Garnacho for role in Manchester United derby win

Paul Scholes says Alejandro Garnacho has impressed him every time he has watched him play, and hailed his display in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Manchester City on Saturday.

The 18-year-old, who came on with 18 minutes to go, teed up Marcus Rashford for the winner on 82 minutes, sending a low cross for the striker to toe home his 16th striker of the season. It means Garnacho now has five assists to his name to add to the two senior goals since his breakthrough.

Speaking on BT Sport after the match, Scholes suggested the Argentine should have come on before Antony, who entered the action at half-time when Anthony Martial was forced off with “small complaints”.

He described Garnacho as “dangerous” and pointed out his best attributes. He said: “I think a special mention for Garnacho as well, he was a massive influence when he came on.

“I’d argue a bit more of an influence than Anthony was - and he’s shown when he came into the game he can be so quick, it looks like he’s going to score goals, runs through all the time, and makes United look really dangerous.”

Scholes added: “He’s been good every time I’ve seen him. I think he’s been a real threat. I thought he should have come on before Antony, who does have his strengths, don’t get me wrong.

“But his lad [Garnacho] is direct, he doesn’t care, there’s no fear in a young player. He wants to score goals and he wants to make goals and he’s more than capable of doing it.”

Fellow pundit and former United teammate Rio Ferdinand praised Garnacho as “a player with his age [that] has no fear and is not affected by reputations.”
