Paul Scholes names Bruno Fernandes' best position for Manchester United

Paul Scholes has claimed Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes is better suited to playing as an advanced midfielder in the number 10 role but he also believes he can operate slightly deeper if needed.

Fernandes, who joined United just over two years ago from Sporting Lisbon, has seen his role evolve in recent weeks under interim manager Ralf Rangnick, playing in a number of different positions.

Since Rangnick's arrival at Old Trafford, Fernandes has operated on the left, as a number 10 and as a number eight.

Although he's done well and shown that he has other strings to his bow during his time playing slightly deeper, Fernandes, in the eyes of Scholes, is best suited to pulling the strings and creating chances in the central attacking midfield berth.

"I think he can do it in certain games, don't get me wrong, but it's only certain games," Scholes told BT Sport when asked if Fernandes could play in a deeper role.

"At Burnley away, yes. Tonight [vs Atletico], possibly because United will have a lot of possession.

"He can play that position without a problem but when you come up against the best teams when they don't have as much possession, and they won't have the ball as much, he will get found out.

"I think he's much better in the number 10 position, floating around, getting on the ball and creating chances as he does."
