Paul Scholes says the decision to appoint Jose Mourinho as Manchester United manager never sat right with him - despite the success the Portuguese tactician enjoyed earlier in his career.
Defeat in the Champions League to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night means the Old Trafford giants can no longer win a trophy this season. Their last silverware came under Mourinho during the 2016/2017 campaign.
Winning a League Cup and Europa League double, the charismatic boss was unable to land any huge prizes during his tenure. However, while former United midfielder Scholes admits he was never able to get on board with Mourinho, he did add that it might have been a different story had he joined United after leaving Porto back in 2004.

United continue their search for a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer; the man who replaced Mourinho when he was sacked in December 2018. Speaking to BT Sport, pundit Scholes said: "Jose Mourinho had lost the fire in his belly when he came to Old Trafford.
"He wasn't the same Mourinho as people knew him. I didn't like it when it happened because he was our main rival for four or five years with Chelsea. It never sat right with me. I'm sure that he tried his best and had problems off the field, too, but I just never felt it was the right stage. If he was coming from Porto to United, I think it would've been a different story."

Scholes added: "People say we have had a bit of pain. I think there's still more to come before we get to where we want to be."
