Paul Scholes makes Jadon Sancho claim as Jack Grealish in England squad ahead of Man United ace

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes believes Jadon Sancho deserved an England call-up more than Manchester City ace Jack Grealish after the former was left out of the squad for the upcoming round of Nations League fixtures.

England manager Gareth Southgate, who guided his side to the final of the European Championship last year, named his squad for the upcoming clashes with Italy and Germany on Thursday afternoon and left United duo Marcus Rashford and Sancho out of his squad. Both players were expected to be given recalls after being left out in June.

However, Southgate has chosen to overlook the United duo, although Rashford's absence appears to be down to the muscle injury that has forced him to miss the Reds' last two matches. Sancho's omission, however, is questionable, especially after he netted his third goal of the season against Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

And for former England international Scholes, he has implied that Southgate's decision to overlook Sancho is a harsh one, insisting he deserved a spot more than Grealish. The latter is yet to score or provide a single assist for City so far this term.

"Gareth's picked his players for a reason, possibly from previous squads," Scholes told BT Sport. "I think he probably deserves to be in over Jack Grealish at the minute.

"He scored a good goal against Liverpool and showed signs tonight. He's better when he's coming inside and linking play.

"He doesn't have that electrifying pace to go past someone on the outside or on the inside. When he was good at Dortmund, he had [Erling] Haaland, [Achraf] Hakimi - he always had someone to link with.

"At Manchester United, if he can link with Fernandes or Eriksen, who are clever players to link with, he could be a good player for Man United."
