Paul Scholes hails Ralf Rangnick tactical decision following Manchester United win vs Leeds

Former midfielder Paul Scholes insists Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick must be credited for making key substitutions at the right time during his side's 4-2 win over Leeds United.

United, despite having been 2-0 up at half-time courtesy of headers from Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes, found themselves on the verge of another disappointing result when Rodrigo and Raphinha both scored in the space of just 24 seconds, ensuring the scores were locked at 2-2 just nine minutes into the second-half.

However, just as Leeds were threatening to complete a famous comeback, Rangnick made the decision to make a double substitution, taking off Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard and introducing Anthony Elanga and Fred.

The decision to hook Pogba instead of Scott McTominay was one that immediately attracted questions, as the former had been enjoying another encouraging performance.

However, Fred fired home United's third to hand the visitors the lead with just 20 minutes left to play.

Elanga also got himself on the scoresheet late on, sweeping home a cool finish.

"We thought it was going to be a nice comfortable afternoon for Man United but they made it hard for themselves," Scholes told the Premier League's official website.

"Man United showed character to come back into the game and you have to give the manager credit - he was brave to take Pogba off but both his subs had a big impact on the game. It's a good win."

Scholes had questioned United's players' character and commitment following last weekend's draw with Southampton, meaning this result will have undoubtedly impressed him.

Victory at Elland Road has moved United four points clear of fifth-placed West Ham United, meaning they remain in the driving seat to secure a place in the top four.
