Paul Scholes criticises 'soft' Bruno Fernandes after Manchester United win against Leeds

Paul Scholes has accused Bruno Fernandes of being “too soft” during Manchester United’s win over Leeds United.

The Portuguese star got himself on the scoresheet just before half-time at Elland Road as he put United 2-0 against Leeds, although Scholes wasn’t too happy with his contribution after the break.

After Rodrigo had pulled a goal back for the hosts when his cross looped over David de Gea’s head, Fernandes was caught on the ball less than a minute later, with Raphinha then latching on to Daniel James’ cross to bring Leeds level.

The United talisman argued with referee Paul Tierney that he had been fouled by Adam Forshaw in losing the ball in the build-up, with Fernandes staying on the floor as Raphina brought the hosts level.

Tierney though waved away the protests, leaving United to fight their way back in front, which they managed to do through Fred and Anthony Elanga.

And Scholes agreed with the referee’s view of the incident, and criticised Fernandes for what he saw as the Portuguese playing for a foul.

"I think Fernandes has to be stronger," Scholes told Premier League Productions.

"He's almost looking for a foul before anything happens and I don't think it is a foul.

"Fernandes has got to be stronger there, that's a little bit too soft. His head is up in the air looking for a foul before he comes in."

Fernandes continued to protest the incident when asked about it after the game, although the 27-year-old conceded he may have to change his thinking in the future.

"I think it was a foul because when I passed the ball with my right foot he stamped on my left," Fernandes told MUTV.

"Obviously, I didn't see if he touched the ball when I made the pass. It's England, no? It's English football so I have to get used to it, it's okay."
