Paul Scholes claims Manchester United have a better squad than Newcastle United after 2-0 defeat

Paul Scholes has claimed that Newcastle United could have won 6-0 against Manchester United despite having a team that he believes contains "no superstars".

Eddie Howe's squad carried out the perfect Carabao Cup revenge with a dominant display that saw them overtake Man United in the Premier League. The Magpies now sit in third with just 11 games left to play this season.

Sunday's victory sees Newcastle edge closer to a return to Champions League football for the first time in 20 years and performances such as that of their 2-0 win are worthy of a place of in Europe's premier competition next term.

After the full-time whistle, Scholes admitted that Newcastle deserved to take all three points from the game despite his belief that Man United have the better of the two squads.

"You try and look at both squads and think which squad would you prefer? I still think I’d prefer the Man United squad," he told Premier League Productions. "The coaching and what the manager has done has been fantastic – squeezing everything out of them. There’s no superstars, they’ve not paid massive money for anybody.

"One thing Newcastle have that [Man] United haven’t got is a settled back four," he added. "They’ve had one for I don’t know how many games now and you saw the difference today. [Man] United’s back four were all over the place.

"[Diogo] Dalot, it looks like they really had a right go at him with [Allan] Saint-Maximin. Antony should really be coming back to help him but he was never in the picture, he never gave his full-back any help whatsoever and that exposed him.

"It looked like a real plan that Newcastle had, but the organisation of Newcastle’s team and the quality they showed. Honestly it could have been 4/5/6-0 and I don’t think you would have complained."
