Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand agree on why Erik ten Hag must copy Mikel Arteta's Arsenal

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand have urged United's new manager Erik ten Hag to follow in the footsteps of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Arteta arrived at the Emirates Stadium back in December 2019 after spending three-and-a-half years as Pep Guardiola's assistant coach at Manchester City. And the Spaniard's time in north London has been a rollercoaster, to say the least.

The Gunners have finished eighth in each of his two seasons, although they did win the FA Cup after beating Manchester City and Chelsea in 2020. Still, Arteta's side have improved leaps and bounds this term and they currently find themselves fourth in the Premier League table - much higher than the majority of pundits and fans alike predicted.

Now, former Red Devils midfielder Scholes has urged new United head coach Ten Hag to try and emulate Arteta next season. "He has to be a tough manager, a little bit like Arteta at Arsenal, he has done a big rebuilding job and took no-nonsense," Scholes told TalkSport.

"I think this manager has to be exactly the same." This comes just one week after Ferdinand had similar advice for the Dutchman.

"Manchester United are obviously now looking for a new manager, and hopefully things [at the club] will change," the former England international told William Hill. "If you look at Arsenal, they have found the manager, they trust in him and they have allowed him to do some things where a lot of people have probably doubted it.

"[Such as] with the [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang situation, where people thought he’s a big player and you have to keep him. But now Arteta has done what he wanted and Arsenal are on a good run at the moment."
