Paul Pogba 'will stay' at Manchester United on one condition as club £5m away from 'Neves deal'

Welcome to the United On My Mind daily round-up, where we take a look at some of the best Manchester United stories that you might have missed.

Paul Pogba has reportedly expressed his desire to stay as a United player, but only on one managerial decision.

Reports claim United were just £5m off with their bid for Wolves' star Ruben Neves with both clubs playing hardball.

And finally, German legend and ex-United man Bastian Schweinsteiger has explained why Ralf Rangnick is good for the club.

Pog-back?

It's been a game of cat and mouse when trying to discover whether or not Pogba is staying at Old Trafford. With just five months left on his current deal, everything indicated to the Frenchman leaving on a free, but reports have claimed things could take a drastic turn.

The Daily Mail have reported the midfielder is ready for a shock U-turn and wants to stay at the club but only if interim boss Rangnick remains in charge. The report also suggests Pogba has been won over by the German coach's vision to build a midfield around him.

Our view: This is rather interesting considering Pogba is yet to play for Rangnick since his arrival, and it also sparks a huge debate. Do United try one last time to create a side with Pogba at the heart of it? Or do they cut ties and move forward into a new era?

It's always been such a difficult situation with Pogba because he hasn't performed as well as we'd have hoped, but the talent is there in bucket loads. However, Rangnick staying as manager would seem like a missed opportunity with several managers across Europe interested in the job.

Neves near miss

It wouldn't be a United daily round-up without the club being linked with a midfielder. Unfortunately, there's still no good news as the situation surrounding Neves will bring even more frustration to United fans.

The Daily Star have reported that Neves to Old Trafford did not materialise as United's supposed £35m bid was £5m short of Wolves' evaluation of the player. The report also explains how the Midlands club is confident they will keep Neves even beyond the summer.

Our view: Is this not just the most United story ever? A player who ticks all the boxes in terms of what the club needs but refuse to up the bid just £5m more to get their man. If this report is accurate, it won't come as the slightest bit of surprise. It feels as if United are in a midfield version of Groundhog Day.

Schweinsteiger’s Rangnick praise

Schweinsteiger isn't exactly renowned for his stint at Old Trafford, but his career was brilliant. The former midfielder spoke to the club's official media and gave an insight into Rangnick.

"I actually know him quite well as a coach from Stuttgart and Schalke but especially when he was working as a coach for Red Bull Leipzig," Schweinsteiger told the UTD Podcast. "He was doing some great things like how he works, how he sees the game, how he sees the club.

"He really can help Man United with creating a new era, with not only the game on the field but also for the whole club. That's what is needed at the moment and that's why I think he is the right person."

Our view: Schweinsteiger's complimentary words will fill United fans with more hope that Rangnick can salvage what's been a difficult first half of the season. Nobody truly knows who will be the permanent manager come next season. Still, words like these, combined with Pogba's apparent desire to stay under the new management, would begin to lead to the idea Rangnick may have one eye on the permanent job.
