Paul Pogba names former Liverpool midfielder as toughest opponent

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has named ex-Liverpool star Emre Can as his toughest opponent.

The 28-year-old, who is currently at Dortmund, spent four years on Merseyside before he departed on a free transfer at the end of the 2017/18 season. He joined Italian giants Juventus, but was only there for two seasons before he moved to Dortmund.

Can made over 160 appearances for the Reds between 2014 and 2018 and scored 14 goals in that time. He made seven league appearances against the Manchester Club during his time at Anfield.

During his time at Liverpool, Can came up against Pogba on just two occasions in the league, two draws in the 2016/17 season. The France international also identified compatriot and Chelsea star N'Golo Kante as a tough opponent, but recalled a 'big battle' with the former Liverpool man.

“Emre Can, Emre Can, yeah. We obviously have N’Golo and everything, but one day I remember I had a big battle with Emre Can," Pogba told FootballJoe when asked of his toughest opponent.

"But with Kante, you pass him and you think there’s another N’Golo because he comes back so fast."

Can went on to make just 45 appearances in his time at Juventus and just six of those came in the Champions League. The midfielder was left 'furious' when he was omitted from Maurizio Sarri's 22-man squad in 2019.
