Paul Pogba departure claim made as Manchester United prepare for midfielder's exit

Gabriel Agbonlahor believes Paul Pogba's expected departure from Manchester United will benefit both the player and the club.

The Frenchman's deal is set to expire in the summer as he prepares to leave on a free for the second time in his career. While his future remains up in the air, the MEN Sport understand the club are braced to start the next season without the World Cup winner's services.

Pogba explained in a candid interview recently that he wasn't happy with his second spell at United. The club's hopes of challenging for the Premier League title were dashed during their autumn slump, they crashed out of the FA Cup against Championship outfit Middlesbrough and were dumped out of the Champions League last week, meaning they can no longer win a trophy this season.

"Paul is an outstanding player, we've seen what he's done in his career, done for France - winning a World Cup," Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT. "But it hasn't worked, has it, at Manchester United?

"There's a saying 'sometimes you just don't go back to clubs you've been at' I don't think it was the right move for him and it just hasn't worked. Yes he's been out of position, sometimes had to play on the left wing, a lot of managers have been there - had a manager like [Jose] Mourinho didn't get on with him - it's hard.

"I think he has been inconsistent at Manchester United. Sometimes a move is best for both parties, I think Manchester United have to move on, Paul Pogba needs to move on, then maybe both will succeed from that."
