Manchester United fans have been reacting to James Garner's performance for Nottingham Forest against Leicester City on Sunday.
Garner was superb in a 4-1 thrashing of the FA Cup holders in the fourth round clash at the City Ground.
The United loanee is enjoying another stellar season on loan at Forest and is at the heart of a promotion push from Steve Cooper's side who are in fine form.
Garner spent the latter half of last season on loan at the Reds and was brought back for another campaign despite interest in him from other clubs.
NottinghamshireLive's colleagues at the Manchester Evening News report that Garner is 'hopeful' of kicking on at United next season and conversations were had about recalling him from Forest before deciding it would be against the player's best interests.
The MEN cite sources close to the player as being "optimistic" about nailing down a place in the Red Devils' midfield with a summer of change up ahead.
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick looks set to depart Old Trafford and Paul Pogba is out of contract in the summer and Donny van de Beek has hardly had a kick and is currently out on loan at Everton.
Meanwhile Nemanja Matic is 34 in August and his deal runs out at the end of next summer.
All that points to a refresh with a new manager coming in and Garner could be at the heart of it, unless Forest can tempt him to remain on Trentside.
United fans have waded in and had their say on the reports, with one writing on social media platform Twitter: "We can see where Garner stands in pre-season."
"Garner should be our back up defensive midfielder next season to Declan Rice or whoever we get," another added, while a third fan said: "There are not many players who switch the play like Pogba and if he leaves United next season then Garner has the potential to negate that impact."
"I would love us to buy Rice and have Garner in the squad too with Pogba going," a fourth fan said, while another added: "I reckon Pogba is going and Garner will be in the squad for next season too."
