Paul Pogba at centre of new transfer battle as Man Utd exit draws closer

Manchester United star Paul Pogba is at the centre of a transfer battle between Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

Pogba has opened talks with both clubs after deciding to leave United as a free agent this summer following the end of his second spell at Old Trafford.

The France World Cup-winner's United deal runs out next month and the 29-year-old has rejected the chance to sign a new one and extend his stay with the club. Despite an underwhelming six-year spell at United, Pogba is not short of options and faces a choice between PSG and a return to former club Juventus.

United's neighbours Manchester City were linked with Pogba, but the midfielder was keen to leave England, with Real Madrid also touted as a possible destination. But Pogba's next club now looks to be between PSG and Juve. French champions PSG have offered Pogba a lucrative deal worth around £350,000-a-week in a bid to tempt him to Paris.

PSG remain desperate to win the Champions League and believe Pogba could help them finally conquer Europe, following the acquisitions of superstar front three Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. But Juve, who sold Pogba to United for £89million in 2016, are also in negotiations with Pogba, in the hope of luring him back to Turin.

Juve president Andrea Agnelli is keen on bringing Pogba back, although it is understood the Italian club cannot match the wages PSG are offering. But they are hoping Pogba's affinity for the club could swing a deal in their favour and see him return to them this summer. Pogba helped Juve win eight major trophies between 2012 and 2016, including four Serie A titles. He is desperate for a fresh start to revive his stalled club career, with his much-vaunted return to United having failed to live up to the hype.

Pogba moving to City now appears a unlikely and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher recently claimed Pep Guardiola should not go near a deal. Carragher said: "I wouldn't go anywhere near him. You win the league every year, you get 95 to 100 points every year. He doesn't work hard enough as the other players. If Pep could get it out of him fantastic, there's no doubt there's ability – no one has ever doubted it.

"But when you see the creative players City have, Foden, Bernardo Silva. These type of players who are brilliant players and don't stop running, working from minute one. That's what makes Manchester City what they are, they're a great team, brilliant manager. I'm not doubting his quality, but he does not work hard enough. When you see him in a France shirt or at times for Manchester United, unbelievable quality. Does special things at different times. But we're still six years in and we're still talking about his best position, who can get the best out of him."
