Paul O'Grady's final moments on camera leave fans in tears

Paul O'Grady's final on-camera moments were shown on ITV as part of his For The Love Of Dogs series.

Filmed at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home shortly before Paul's sudden and unexpected death last month, the opening episode of the 11th and final series saw the entertainer head over heels with a Newfoundland, Peggy, who needed major surgery.

Paul looked back at some of the dogs he met over the years along with the lucky few he personally rehomed. Peggy was the centre of attention in tonight's episode with Paul enamoured by her friendliness and charm.

The presenter was in high spirits throughout which felt bittersweet to viewers. At the top of the programme, he declared, "it's good to be back," without realising these would be his last on-camera moments.

For The Love Of Dogs proved to be generally hard viewing for fans with a happy on-screen Paul branded as heartbreaking. Sharing their emotions online, one viewer said: "An inspiration, kind-hearted man, who adored everything. Remarkable."

Another added: "Paul O’Grady starting the show off with “we are back” broke my heart." While a third said: "Omg it's hard watching #PaulOGrady it's such a shame. Gone too soon."

A fourth said: "In tears #PaulOGrady." A final added: "Breaks my heart seeing Paul on our screens."

Paul accompanied a scared and nervous dog to overcome her fear of touch with another flooring him after trying to sneak her snacks before an operation. Wrapping the programme, he issued a particular heart wrenching farewell to Peggy.

Paul said: "It's too hard to say goodbye. It was a pleasure meeting you Peggy."
