Paul O'Grady died in his 'own bed' with husband Andre beside him, reveals close friend

The death of Paul O'Grady came as a shock to many, however, the popular entertainer's final hours were 'peaceful' and surrounded by love, a close friend of the star has revealed. Actress Linda Thorson appeared on ITV's Good Morning Britain today, Thursday, March 30, to share details of her friendship with the national treasure and during the interview revealed how the presenter died.

In a statement released by Paul's husband Andre Portasio, it was confirmed the presenter and comedian died "unexpectedly but peacefully" at the age of 67 on Tuesday. Andre said: "It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening. We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.

“He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion. I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.”

Speaking about her friend, Linda told Susanna Reid and Adil Ray: "He was so happy, full of life. But he died in his own bed, his husband was there, Andre the most divine man who he has been with for many years. He's only 41, he will be so bereft of Paul, he worshipped Paul.

Linda continued: "He gave a speech at Paul's 60th birthday and Cilla was there and Barbara Windsor, they're all gone. They'll all be partying in heaven and the Queen."

According to the Mirror, Linda told Susanna and Adil that Paul's husband had made a speech full of love for the entertainer's 60th birthday. "We will all be there for you Andre," the former Avengers star added.

There has been an outpouring of grief from stars throughout the entertainment business as those who knew him rushed to pay tribute to the presenter and animal rights campaigner.

In a statement released on behalf of Queen Consort, Camilla, said she was "deeply saddened to have learned of the death of Paul O'Grady, with whom she worked closely to support the work of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and whose warm heart and infectious humour lit up the lives of so many".

Top Gear host Paddy McGuinness added: "Paul started in the pubs and working men's clubs but finished as an icon of British TV. I'll miss him very much. Rest in peace Paul."

Of course, there were hilarious anecdotes too. Loose Women's Denise Welch revealed on Wednesday's episode of the daytime show that Paul had once "plied" Blind Date legend Cilla Black with champagne before an episode aired so, by the time, she joined the Loose Women panel for a chat live on air, she was, in Denise's words "absolutely hammered."
