Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy storm to Rowing World Championship final in typical fashion

Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy have made the Lightweight Men's Double Sculls finals at the World Championships.

The Championships take place at the Czech Republic and all the pressure were on the pair going into their semi-final.

But the two Cork men showed why they are reigning Olympic champions with a gutsy semi-final win.

The pair did not burst out of the blocks and stayed patient and were in second place at the 500 metre mark as they trailed Switzerland.

The two were well positioned coming into the half way point but remained in second place which raised some concern for the Irish crew of two.

At no point did it look like Ireland would not qualify as they were comfortably in second but coming up the 1500 metre point they took to lead.

And in signature style, the Olympic Champions pulled away for the final section of the race to comfortably win their semi-final and make the final.

In what was an entertaining race, Ireland were pushed all the way to the line but did show their class in the end.

Earlier in the day there was an impressive second place finish from Aoife Casey and Margaret Cremen in their semi-final.

The pair finished in second and looked comfortable in doing so and will be gearing up for a chance at a medal this weekend.
