Paul Mullin scores two stunning goals to start biggest party Wrexham has seen for years

Former Everton and Liverpool academy hopeful Paul Mullin this evening scored twice to end Wrexham's non-league exile.

Involved in a relentless title tussle with Notts County over the past few months, both sides recently surpassed the 100-point mark in pursuit of top spot and the golden ticket to the Football League.

Requiring a win against Boreham Wood in their penultimate league fixture, Phil Parkinson's side got off to a nightmare start on Saturday evening after conceding inside the opening minute of the match. Rallying to secure the three points to confirm their status as National League champions, this moment has been a long time coming for those associated with the club having last been in League Two in 2008.

The standout figure during Wrexham's resurgence since being taken over by the Hollywood duo of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Mullin's two finishes of the highest quality in Wrexham's 3-1 triumph saw him take his goalscoring tally to 38 for the current league campaign.

Unable to make the cut at both Everton and Liverpool as a youngster, the 28-year-old spent time at Morecambe and Swindon Town before returning to Merseyside in 2018 to sign for Tranmere Rovers. Although part of the side that secured promotion to League One in 2018/19, first-team opportunities proved hard to come by due to the goalscoring exploits of James Norwood.

His decision to swap Tranmere for Cambridge United on a permanent basis in 2020 proved extremely beneficial, becoming a focal point in attack as his 32 league strikes fired the U's to automatic promotion. Due to only signing a one-year deal, a number of clubs had Mullin on their radar due to his impressive displays but it was Wrexham who won the race to secure his services.

The Litherland-born striker bagged 26 times during his maiden campaign in the fifth tier as the Dragons narrowly missed out on going up, though he and his team-mates have made no mistake on this occasion and will be expected to continue climbing the divisions due to their strong financial backing.

There were jubliant scenes at the final whistle in Wrexham with a pitch invasion, McElhenney in tears, Reynolds hugging everyone in sight - and Mullin raised onto the shoulders of a very happy fan.
