Paul Mitchell’s Tottenham transfer verdict as Chelsea hint already dropped over potential move

Paul Mitchell is just the latest in a long line of names to be linked with a switch to Chelsea in recent months. It has been suggested that the former Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig man could potentially be on the move to Stamford Bridge.

According to The Athletic, he is being ‘monitored’ by two out of the three parties interested in completing a takeover for the club. Whilst Mitchell is a fresh name associated with the Blues, he is already well known across north London due to his work with Spurs, having been the club’s head of recruitment for two-and-a-half seasons under Mauricio Pochettino.

He certainly played a crucial role in setting the club on the path to success under the Argentine. During his first transfer window in charge of Spurs, he managed to secure the bargain signing of Dele Alli from former club Milton Keynes Dons. Whilst the England midfielder did not quite manage to hit the heights expected of him in the latter stages of his career in north London, he enjoyed an exhilarating few seasons with Spurs, having become an effective goalscoring midfielder.

Mitchell then followed the success of Alli’s arrival with the acquisitions of Son Heung-Min, Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier in the following summer - the trio going on to become key players under Pochettino. Meanwhile, Victor Wanyama was also signed from one of the recruitment expert’s other former clubs Southampton the following year.

Whilst Mitchell was able to earn plenty of praise for his shrewd work in the market, his signings did not always go on to be successes. In his first summer window, he also welcomed Clinton N’Jie and Kevin Wimmer to the club - both players who underwhelmed during their spells in north London.

The likes of Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou were also added to the Spurs squad under the watchful eye of Mitchell, whilst the jury remains out over how much of a success the big-money acquisition of Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle United really was.

Amid the links to Chelsea, Mitchell already appears to have dropped a hint on his future, with the Englishman currently involved with Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco. Speaking in an interview with The Independent in 2021, he said: “I have to say, I love the Premier League, I do.

“But I’m enjoying the challenges that working abroad have given me and I love that. I would never say never [about returning to England], but I have a large project here on my hands and I want to try to do the best job I can.”
