Paul Mescal’s first iconic acting role was a long way from an Oscar nomination

We all have to start somewhere, and Ireland's newest Oscar nominee Paul Mescal started in a humble but iconic place - Ballyhaunis.

Some of Ireland's greatest acting talent has started in adverts for major Irish brands, including Michael Fassbender in a Guinness ad and Chris O'Dowd in an ad for Meteor broadband to name but a few.

And Mescal is definitely among that list as his first major acting gig was starring in a Denny's advert that has gone down in history.

In the ad, Pauls character decides that he's going to travel the world after taking a bite of a Denny sausage, as well as a not so sly look from his disappointed father.

He eagerly asks his dad to grab the globe, spin it, and pick a place.

Unfortunately for Paul, his dad's finger lands on Ballyhaunis and off he goes.

The man from Kildare has come far enough after he was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Aftersun, which has received rave reviews since it released.

He'll be joined in the best actor category by Colin Farrell, who was nominated for his performance in The Banshees of Inisherin.

It was an historic night for Irish talent nominated for an Oscar, with Banshees up for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay among its nine nominations.

Kerry Condon, Brendan Gleeson, and Barry Keoghan are nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Actor for their roles.
