Paul Mescal releases debut song Slip Away as part of new movie Carmen

Irish actor Paul Mescal has made his first foray into the music industry, debuting a new single recorded for a film where he plays a marine with PTSD who falls madly in love.

The Normal People star has released Slip Away, which forms part of the soundtrack for his latest film Carmen.

It marks the 27-year-old's first official music release, following in the footsteps of his younger sister Nell, a popular up and coming singer, with the siblings previously releasing video footage of them singing and playing piano together.

The Kildare native plays Aidan in Carmen, a musical drama directed by Benjamin Millepied. Aidan meets Carmen, who is forced to flee her home in the Mexican desert after the murder of her mother.

Carmen, played by Mellisa Barrera, meets Aidan at a dangerous border crossing, after which the two escape to Los Angeles where they wait it out at a nightclub known as a sanctuary for music and dance.

The film, which has led to a number of soundtracks including Slip Away sung by Mescal, premiered in September 2022 at the Toronto International Film Festival, and is marked for a US release this month and a possible UK one next month.

The one minute and 47 second song Slip Away is available to listen to on YouTube and feature the Aftersun star, who recently picked up a Best Actor at the Olivier Awards this year for his role in the remake of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire.

He is seen singing acoustically while brandishing a guitar sitting near some steps in a solo performance.

While it may have been his first official time singing to the camera as part of an official release, he previously sang alongside fellow Irish man Dermot Kennedy in 2020 as part of a livestreamed lockdown performance.
