Paul Mescal clears up how to pronounce his name after 'everybody' says it wrong

Paul Mescal has said that many people mispronounce his name with the Irish actor placing the blame on a popular type of alcohol.

Mescal continues to rise in popularity as he makes waves in Hollywood. His name is on everyone's lips as awards season heats up but the actor has noticed a trend in how people mispronounce his surname.

The Kildare native explained that he is often referred to as Paul 'Mezcal', with people confusing his surname with the Mexican alcoholic spirit. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 27-year-old said: "People get confused with how to pronounce my name because of the drink mezcal. Everybody does it it!"

Mescal joked that because of the similarity between his name and the alcohol, he might end up producing his own brand of the spirit. He made it clear for anyone unsure about how to pronounce his surname that it should come with a soft 'S', meaning it should be pronounced 'mess-cal'.

Mescal is in the running for Best Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards for his performance in Aftersun but he will face stiff competition from fellow Irishman Colin Farrell; as well as Brendan Fraser, Austin Butler and Bill Nighy.

Irish talent is enjoying a quite remarkable awards season, with an unprecedented 14 nominations for the Oscars, which is due to take place on March 12 in Los Angeles.

It was a disappointing night for Ireland at last night's Screen Actors Guild awards, however, as Irish talent came away empty-handed. However, hopes are still high that there will be plenty of Irish success at the Academy Awards in a couple of weeks' time.
