Paul Merson believes Manchester United can challenge for the Premier League title next season if they sign Harry Kane, although he doubts whether he will leave Tottenham.
Kane has been linked with a move to United this summer, having come close to leaving Spurs last year. The England captain looked set to join Manchester City, only for Tottenham to hold firm on their hefty valuation of the striker.
With City looking set to turn their attentions towards Erling Haaland this summer, Kane’s hopes of a transfer to the Etihad look to be fading away. A move to Manchester though could still be on the cards.

The 28-year-old has been linked with United, with his former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino still in the running to become the Reds’ new permanent manager. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has already indicated a striker will be one of the club’s transfer priorities in the summer.
And Merson believes Kane’s arrival, plus the signing of Declan Rice, could be the catalyst for United to challenge for the title again next season. The former Arsenal midfielder though doubts whether Kane will leave north London.
“Kane’s future has once again come under the limelight and it’ll be up to him this summer,” Merson told Sportskeeda. “Manchester City are reportedly in for Erling Haaland so they may not come back in for him, so could it probably be Manchester United?
“If they get Kane and Declan Rice, I think they can challenge next season under a good manager.
“Will he look to move on in search of trophies or stay at Tottenham to break Alan Shearer’s goal scoring record? Something tells me he might stay - his mind is probably made up already!”
