Paul Merson admits signing 'transformed' Liverpool

Paul Merson has explained the impact Luis Diaz has made since arriving at Liverpool.

The Reds signed Diaz from Porto in the January transfer window, after agreeing a £49million deal with the Portuguese club. Tottenham Hotspur were also in the running, but Liverpool moved fast to get the move over the line.

Since arriving at Anfield, Diaz has scored five goals and provided three assists in his 21 appearances so far. His most recent heroics were his cameo performance in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Villarreal, where he scored a vital goal to help the Reds reach the final.

Speaking about Diaz, former Arsenal star Merson has praised the impact the Colombia international has made since removing to Merseyside. The Sky Sports pundit explained how the addition of Diaz has made the Reds more versatile in their approach to facing different types of opposition.

“Speaking of Liverpool’s attacking unit, the addition of Luis Diaz has sort of transformed them,” Merson wrote for Sportskeeda .

“He is ahead of Diogo Jota at the moment. Although they are two very different footballers, their flexibility allows the Reds to line up in many different ways based on the opposition.

“With Sadio Mane also in the mix, you only know that Mohamed Salah is going to play as a right-winger as the rest of them could pretty much play anywhere!”
