Paul McGinn explains Hibs exit 'shock' and transfer chat with Lee Johnson that sealed Leith fate

Paul McGinn insists regular minutes were the key reason behind his transfer to Motherwell - although departing Hibs was a shock.

The right-back had signed a one-year extension at Easter Road but new boss Lee Johnson quickly informed him he would find game time limited. It was then the 31-year-old knew he had to be on the move, jumping at a move across Premiership clubs to Motherwell, who will contest in this year's Europa Conference League qualifiers.

Despite the circumstances, the former Partick Thistle and St Mirren defender holds no bitterness towards Hibs. McGinn told the Daily Record of his move: “The new manager at Hibs came in. We had a chat and he said I was a good player but I’d be down the pecking order. That’s his decision but at my age I don’t want to be having to fight my way into a team, I want to be playing all the time.

“At that point it became common knowledge that I could move on. I had a few options but the Motherwell one was the one that appealed most to me.

“I suppose having to leave Hibs did come as a shock but it’s always the case when a new manager comes in that you’re never quite sure how you’re going to stand.

“I wasn’t new to this. I’ve seen it all before and knew there might be a chance I wouldn’t be in his plans. But there’s absolutely no point being bitter about it. It gets you nowhere.

“I’m just happy that I’ve got it settled and I’m looking forward to starting out at Motherwell.”
