Paul McCartney has twelve words for fans as he turns 80

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney celebrates his 80th birthday today (Saturday).

Born in Walton on June 18, 1942, the dad-of-five became known around the globe for being a member of one of the greatest bands of all time, after forming The Beatles with John Lennon and George Harrison in 1960.

Writing many famous songs including Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Blackbird, The Long and Winding Road and Let It Be to name just a few, the legend has spent six decades in the spotlight.

After life with the Fab Four, Sir Paul launched a successful solo career and continues to perform - returning to the city on many occasions. And Sir Paul is still performing with the same vigour he had during The Beatles’ peak in the 1960s.

This year, only a week after he turns 80, he will become Glastonbury festival's oldest ever headline act. In addition to being a leading force in The Beatles, McCartney has enjoyed a glittering solo career since 1970, when he released his first solo album “McCartney”.

He is the only musician ever to have had number one hits as a solo artist, as well as part of a duet, trio, quartet, and a quintet.

Fans and celebrity pals alike have rushed to wish Sir Paul well today. And the 80-year-old took to Twitter this evening to say thank you. In a tweet, Sir Paul simply said: "Thanks for all the lovely greetings and warm wishes for my birthday".
