Patriots to sign CB Malcolm Butler to 2-year deal

The New England Patriots are reuniting with Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler, his agent told multiple reporters. Butler and the Patriots agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth up to $9 million.

Butler spent 2021 in retirement after spending a signing a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. They released him earlier this offseason, and New England decided to scoop him up after a tryout earlier this week.

Butler last played for the Patriots from 2014 to 2017. He also spent time with the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2020.

He joins a group of cornerbacks which includes Jalen Mills, Jonathan Jones, Terrance Mitchell, Shaun Wade, Joejuan Williams and Justin Bethel.

New England traded away cornerback Stephon Gilmore during the 2021 season, and saw its other star cornerback, J.C. Jackson, sign with the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason. So it has seen significant turnover in the secondary. Butler’s return could put him atop the depth chart.
