Patriots reportedly hiring former rival play-caller as WR coach

The New England Patriots are set to hire former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing as their new wide receivers coach, according to the Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard.

Downing most recently coached with the New York Jets as their quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. He took over the offensive play-calling duties for the team last season after Nathaniel Hackett was fired.

Downing served as an offensive coordinator under Vrabel during his run with the Titans. The Patriots have built what some are deeming an all-star coaching staff for 2025, and this latest hire gives them another experienced coach in the building.

There had been questions regarding the development of the Patriots wide receivers last season, and they’ll now look to Downing to help turn things around.

His experience as a passing game coordinator and play-caller could translate well to a wide receivers room that needs all of the help it can get.
