The busy day of player transactions continued for the New England Patriots with the team announcing the release of former two-time Super Bowl champion Trey Flowers.
It’s a tough turn of events for the veteran defensive end, who hasn’t played a meaningful snap of football since the 2021 season. Flowers has been dealing with a foot injury, and he was placed on the physically unable to perform list to start the season.
There was a genuine excitement about his return to New England. Not only did the team draft Flowers in 2015, but he cemented his legacy with the franchise with some truly iconic plays, including the clutch sack on Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan at Super Bowl LI.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Patriots also announced they had placed backup quarterback/wide receiver Malik Cunningham on waivers. It hasn’t been a good day for fan-favorites with both Cunningham and Flowers being let go by the team.
