Patriots QB Mac Jones suffering from back injury after Dolphins game, team announces

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is dealing with a new back injury, the team announced after Sunday’s 20-7 season-opening loss at Miami.

Because of the announced back injury, Jones did not sit for a post-game press conference, as required by league rules. He was spotted entering the X-ray room and trainers room at Hard Rock Stadium post-game. According to the NFL Network, Jones’ X-rays were negative.

It’s unknown how or when Jones suffered the injury or what his availability will be for next week’s game at Pittsburgh.

Against the Dolphins, he went 21-of-30 for 213 yards, one touchdown and interception versus. Jones took two sacks and absorbed two other hits, including a roughing the passer penalty in the fourth quarter. Bill Belichick deflected when asked if Jones was hurt.

“I haven’t been in the training room,” Belichick said post-game.

One of the sacks Jones took resulted in a scoop-and-score by Miami edge rusher Melvin Ingram in the second quarter, a touchdown that eventually proved to be Sunday’s game-winner.
