New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye agreed with the criticism of Patriots coach Jerod Mayo.
Following the team’s 32-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, Mayo called his team ‘soft’ for getting pushed around on both sides of the ball.
Maye had a productive game, throwing for 276 yards and two touchdowns on the day. He has been a bright spot for a Patriots team that has been struggling. In two games as the starter, he has thrown for 541 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.
Nevertheless, the Patriots have continued their downward spiral, even with Maye showing promise on the field. They have lost six games in a row since their season-opening upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
“Coach Mayo isn’t going to come in here and say something he hasn’t said to the locker room. I think we’re not tough. He always preaches being tough,” Maye told reporters, per a team-provided video, via NESN.com’s Sean T. McGuire. “We’re not running the football, stopping the run and covering kicks, is what he said. I think he does a great job relaying the message to us, and the guys know.”
The Patriots have to get better on both sides of the ball. Maye clearly has potential, and the rookie quarterback will look to pick up the first divisional win of his career on Sunday against a tough Jets team with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.
