San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance went from being a starter to the No. 3 option on the depth chart. Now, the 49ers could be considering trading their former first-round draft pick.
When listing the top potential trade destinations for Lance, Touchdown Wire’s Natalie Miller named the New England Patriots as a potential landing spot. This could make sense, especially if quarterback Mac Jones struggles in his third season.
New England may want to shake things up at quarterback in a loaded AFC East division.
On top of the talent in the division, the AFC prides itself on quarterback play with talented signal-callers like Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert and Aaron Rodgers.
Lance to the Patriots would give the quarterback position a fresh reboot. At only 23 years old, there is still room for growth and development for Lance.
Here’s an excerpt of what Miller had to say:
This Patriots offense is heavily dependent on a strong running attack, and offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is known as a quarterback whiz, so the schematic fit makes sense. It just becomes a matter if you are willing to wave the white flag on your first round investment in Jones, and if you can afford to allow Lance develop with patience growing thin in New England for just about everyone in the building.
It is an interesting thing to think about, especially considering how Jones was selected in the same draft as Lance in 2021. The best-case scenario would be Jones having a strong year for New England, which would put all of this trade talk to bed.
Time will tell how things go once the season is up and rolling.
