New England Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux wasn’t a fan of the “fire Mayo” chants at Gillette Stadium following the team’s 40-7 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday.
When asked about the chants after the game, the veteran defender admitted he heard them on the field.
“I heard it. I get it. [Fans are] pissed off. They pay their money for season tickets and to see the Patriots… A wise man once told me, ‘I’m OK with the Patriots rebuild because I saw success for the last 20 years, so I’m OK,’ but a lot of people can’t take that,’” Godchaux told reporters, via NBC Sports Boston’s Justin Leger.
“I know we don’t tank around here. We still want to win football games, but the ‘Fire Mayo’ chants is just ridiculous. I mean, the guy’s first year, first season. It’s not going to be golden. We didn’t expect to go win a Super Bowl this year. I get it. Nobody wants to get beat 40-7. But the ‘Fire Mayo’ chants is just ridiculous.”
The Patriots were dominated in all phases by the Chargers. They dropped to 3-13 on the season with their sixth straight loss. The Patriots haven’t won a game since November 10 against the Chicago Bears. Godchaux recorded eight tackles on the afternoon, matching his season-high.
The Patriots have major decisions to make for the future of the franchise. Whether the team moves forward or not with Jerod Mayo as head coach might be the biggest decision of all.
