Patriots cut former Pro Bowl LB after disastrous Week 17 loss

The New England Patriots are reportedly waiving former Pro Bowl linebacker Yannick Ngakoue, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It’s a move that comes less than two months after the Patriots claimed Ngakoue on waivers, following his release by the Baltimore Ravens. He appeared in six games for New England and played in 39 percent of the defensive snaps for the team.

There was hope that he could help spark the stagnant pass rush, but like many of the Patriots’ moves this season, it didn’t work out the way the team expected.

Parting ways now is a win-win for both sides. Ngakoue could be picked up by a contending team looking to boost its pass-rushing depth, while the Patriots freed up a spot on their roster for another young player to  prove himself in the upcoming regular season finale against the Buffalo Bills.

There’s still one game left, but the Patriots are shifting to offseason mode.
