Patriots coach Jerod Mayo shares update on Drake Maye’s head injury

The New England Patriots are obviously celebrating their much-needed win over the New York Jets on Sunday, but the consequence of that victory was rookie quarterback Drake Maye going down with a head injury.

He is currently in concussion protocol after Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood delivered a helmet-to-helmet hit to the back of his head on a play that wasn’t flagged. On Monday, Mayo admitted he was surprised to learn Maye was taken to the blue tent considering he threw a couple of nice balls after the hit.

“I was surprised when [Jim] Whalen told me he had to go to the medical tent because he threw a couple good balls afterwards,” Mayo told media members, via a team video. “I thought he was still pretty sharp in those regards. But obviously it’s above my pay grade as far as pulling him out of the game and putting him in the protocol.”

Maye’s status will be worth monitoring this week. There’s a chance he could miss Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans if he doesn’t clear concussion protocol in time.

However, it’s also possible that there aren’t significant symptoms, and he clears in time to play.

Even after Jacoby Brissett’s incredible comeback victory over the Jets, there’s no question that Maye gives the Patriots their best chance to win. In three games, he’s been the team’s best player on both sides of the ball.

There’s hope that will continue in a winnable game against the Titans in Week 9.
