Patrick Vieira makes prediction about Manchester United's first season under Erik ten Hag

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira believes Manchester United will be aiming to launch a Premier League title charge this coming season.

Vieira made the admission during his pre-match press conference ahead of United facing Palace in their latest pre-season friendly in Melbourne on Tuesday. United have made an encouraging start to their pre-season preparations, winning their opening two friendlies, scoring eight goals in the process.

After beating Liverpool 4-0 in Thailand last Tuesday, United recovered from a goal down to beat Melbourne Victory 4-1 at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. Despite making wholesale changes at half-time in both matches, manager Erik ten Hag will be pleased with what he has seen from his players so far, although there's much work to do.

And for Vieira, who had no shortage of history with United during his playing days, the Reds will be aiming to compete significantly higher up the Premier League table than they did last season.

The former Arsenal skipper said: "It looks like the new manager starts to implement way he wants team to play. Look at the individual talent in that team.

"United used to play to win the Premier League. I think this year they will be there trying to qualify for the Champions League or win the title."

United — who have just made Lisandro Martinez their third signing of the summer — finished sixth in the Premier League last term, meaning they were consigned to Europa League football for this forthcoming campaign. They will be desperate to get back into the Champions League as a priority in their first season under Ten Hag.
