Patrick Roberts saves Sunderland season as Celtic favourite reminds everyone what he's all about

Former Celtic hero Patrick Roberts netted a dramatic 96th minute equaliser against Watford to keep Sunderland's play-off hopes alive at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats found themselves 2-0 down with 20 minutes to play after goals from Christian Kabasele and Scotland star Ryan Porteous had put the visitors in the ascendancy. At that point, Sunderland's chances of playing Premier League football next season looked bleak. But Luke O'Nien handed the Wearside side a lifeline with an excellent finish into the bottom corner to set up a tense climax.

Sunderland dominated a whopping 70 per cent of possession and registered 25 shots at goal but struggled to make their advantage count until Roberts popped up with a huge stoppage time strike into the top corner just as the referee was ready to blow the final whistle. The results now means Tony Mowbray's men have the opportunity to gain a play-off spot if they beat Preston North End on the final day of the league season and other results go their way. They currently sit on 66 points after 45 games, whereas Millwall, who face Blackburn, are two points ahead and occupy the remaining play-off spot.

It's been a it of a career redemption for Roberts, with the 26-year-old scoring five goals and providing seven assists for Sunderland this season as they look to return to the top-flight.

Roberts had a extremely successful period at Celtic between 2016 and 2018 under Brendan Rodgers while on-loan from Manchester City. But following that spell he was farmed out five more times across the continent without reaching his full potential. However since cutting ties with City last summer and joining Sunderland, his career has excelled once again putting behind those tough years and on the brink of a potential day out at Wembley and Premier League promotion.
