Patrick Roberts confirms next move as former Celtic star left in no doubt after 2024 decision

Sunderland have confirmed that former Celtic winger Patrick Roberts has completed his return to the Stadium of Light for their Championship push.

The former Manchester City player has bounced from club to club since completing a move to the Etihad from Fulham but looked at home after penning a short-term deal with Alex Neil's men last season. He helped them through the League One play-offs and now they look forward to second tier football down south.

Roberts was out of contract but Sunderland have now moved to tie the winger down on a two-year deal.

Since his City move seven years ago, Roberts has been at seven different clubs, including Celtic, where he made himself a favourite over two and a half seasons that saw him claim seven trophies.

After spells abroad and in England again, Roberts reckons that this is the best move for him and that good things await in season 2022/23.

Roberts said: “My mind has always been made up about where I want to be and it feels amazing to be back after what we achieved last season.

"I’m pleased that we have done the deal early because I can now enjoy pre-season and get ready for the new campaign, which I felt was important."

Manager Neil added: “I’ve always liked Patrick as a player and I’ve tried to sign him on a couple of occasions for different clubs.

"From working with him during my time here, he is exactly what I anticipated - he has real quality, can make the difference in big games and he has an excellent work ethic and attitude. He will be a really important player for us once again next season.”
