Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is sporting a piece of equipment at OTAs that he didn’t wear during the 2018 season.
During Thursday’s practice, Mahomes was spotted wearing a visor on his helmet. This is something that he didn’t wear during the 2018 season. In fact, the first time that we had seen Mahomes wear a visor was during the Oakley “See It In Prizm” campaign, which followed the announcement of his partnership with the brand.
Mahomes was the first NFL player to ever partner with the Oakley brand, and for that specific campaign he wore a visor with their Prizm technology in it. It appears that Mahomes will wear a visor this offseason (though it’s not clear if that visor has the Prizm technology in it). The NFL prohibits players wearing tinted visors unless a doctor states that one is required. The one Mahomes is wearing at OTAs appears to be clear, as does the one from Oakley.
Check out this video that KCTV-5 captured from today’s practice:
There are medical and protective benefits to wearing a visor. They can also be utilized to hide a player’s eyes from his opponents, which can be especially deadly with a quarterback like Mahomes, who has shown the ability to throw no-look passes. If Mahomes is wearing a visor with the Oakley Prizm technology, those are specifically designed to enhance color and contrast.
Mahomes was asked about his new visor during today’s media availability, and specifically whether it will be staying during the regular season.
“Yeah, we’re trying it out,” Mahomes said. “I definitely like it and I’ve liked it these past couple of days. We’re going to keep trying it out. Hopefully I keep playing good in it. I’m pretty superstitious, so if I am playing well with it, I’ll keep it going.”
So far nothing with the visor has triggered Mahomes’ superstitions. Mahomes did mention that he threw one interception to Kendall Fuller earlier this week during OTAs.
Who knows, maybe we’ll see Mahomes add a neck roll to his outfit in the future.
