The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense has been sputtering during the first two weeks of the 2023 season.
Patrick Mahomes acknowledged that during his Wednesday presser and was asked about Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s involvement in the offense.
Buy Chiefs Tickets“We haven’t been great offensively just in general,” Mahomes explained. “As the offense gets going and we start finding our rhythm, you are going to start seeing those shot to Marquez [Valdes-Scantling] down the field, you are going to see him more involved in the offense but when you can’t stay in rhythm – that’s me included, – as an offense, it’s hard to get the guys the targets that they deserve, and that should get.”
When receivers are not seeing targets or struggling to make an impact on the game, they become frustrated and irritated. However, Mahomes does not see that type of attitude in the receiver room.
“From that whole receiving room, I haven’t seen any frustration,” Mahomes continued. “I think the frustration is probably more of me about myself and how the offense has been doing. Everybody’s had that mentality – we just got to keep working, keep getting better – Obviously, we want to play better because the defense is playing so well, we want to take some of that pressure off of them.”
Defenses have played Kansas City’s offense differently in recent years, and Mahomes broke down how defenses have changed their schemes since his first couple of years in the league.
“We get a lot more zone coverages, a lot more deeper coverages,” Mahomes told reporters. “You look at the interception I threw to [Justin] Watson this last week. In previous years, that safety on the back side is not that deep, and not able to get back there. I looked over to the right and saw [the safety] open up his hips to the right, so I thought there was a chance I could throw it over the top.
“I got it over the top of the guy who was covering [Justin Watson], but the safety made a play. It shows that defenses are going to continue to play back and make me be patient. I have to be able to do that, take what’s there, not have negative plays happen, and with our defense playing like it is, we will continue to score, and defenses will have to become aggressive at some point.”
Kansas City’s offense has a great opportunity to get back on track against a Chicago Bears team that has struggled during the first two weeks of the new season.
