Kansas City Chiefs players have answered questions all week about the depth of the team’s receiving corps following Kadarius Toney’s injury on Sunday. The amount of young talent at Andy Reid’s disposal is undeniable, and in Toney’s absence, there will be extra opportunities for fans to see which receiver is ready to take the next step as the team’s primary option.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes had an MVP season and won Kansas City their third Super Bowl title after the departure of Tyreek Hill in 2022, so optimism reigns supreme in St. Joseph as the team works through training camp. Mahomes shared his thoughts on players who have stepped up since Toney’s untimely injury while speaking with reporters after practice on Tuesday.
“I think a lot of guys will kind of fill [Toney’s] role throughout training camp,” The reigning MVP explained. “I want guys just to be themselves. I mean, you’ve seen them; this offense can be run a lot of different ways. And so obviously, we could Kadarius (Toney) is in there, we run it one way because of his talent and what he can do, and when he’s not in there, we run it up we can run a different way to really accelerate the other guys’ talents.
“Guys like Skyy Moore [and] Rashee Rice will step up as well as guys like Marquez [Valdes-Scantling] and Justin Watson. We [also] have a lot of tight ends, we have a lot of depth to this entire team this year. And so I’m so excited for guys to go out there and seize the opportunity.”
Marquez Valdes-Scantling had success last season with Mahomes as the Chiefs’ primary deep-threat receiver. He could see that role expanded to start the season while Toney recovers or potentially see his spot taken by the younger members of Kansas City’s receiving corps as training camp wears on.
