Patrick Mahomes passed Matthew Stafford as fastest player to 25,000 passing yards

Patrick Mahomes and Matthew Stafford are the last two quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl in the NFL, and they’re now connected because of a record that was broken in Week 3. After airing it out for 272 yards on the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Mahomes has become the fastest quarterback to 25,000 passing yards in NFL history, surpassing the veteran signal-caller of the Los Angeles Rams’ previous record.

Stafford set the record at 90 games during his seventh season with the Detroit Lions in 2015. While Mahomes also broke the record during his seventh season in the league, he made his 83rd career start for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Mahomes would make just one start in his rookie season and he’s now become one of the most electrifying players on and off the field. The Chiefs’ superstar quarterback has thrown for at least 4,700 yards in the four seasons he’s made 15 or more starts.

Through the first three weeks of this season, Mahomes has 803 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions. Before Mahomes, Stafford used to be the quarterback who wowed everyone with his sidearm throws.

Even though Stafford didn’t have the success with the Lions that Mahomes has had with the Chiefs, he has put up gaudy numbers in his career. And in his debut season with the Rams in 2021, Stafford nearly threw for 5,000 yards for the second time in his career en route to a Super Bowl victory.

What Mahomes has done in his first seven-plus seasons is nothing short of impressive and to pass Stafford in any statistic — especially passing yards —to begin his career is far from an easy feat.
