Patrick Mahomes on looming Chiefs cuts: ‘I’m rooting for everybody’

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has competed with 89 of his teammates through training camp and two preseason games, and seems to have settled back into Andy Reid’s offense after a standout performance against the Arizona Cardinals last week.

Though his job for the 2023 season is safe, the same can’t be said for more than 30 of his cohorts on Kansas City’s 90-man roster, who will be cut next week after the Chiefs’ final exhibition matchup against the Cleveland Browns. Mahomes was asked about the mass-cuts after Kansas City’s Wednesday practice session, and made it clear that he isn’t playing favorites in providing input for who he’d like to see on the team ahead of the regular season.

“It’s hard, I don’t like to follow it too closely,” Mahomes explained. “I’m rooting for everybody. It’s hard to sit there and – you don’t want to promote for one guy to make it over another because this is people’s livelihoods, this is people’s lives. I let those guys, Brett Veach and coach (Andy) Reid handle that, Clark Hunt everyone like that.

“They do a good job of finding the best players to put in position to have success. I don’t follow that too closely – it’s hard for me I like all the guys in the locker room, it’s hard to see guys, even if it’s (just) for a moment, their dreams kind of get cut right there so it definitely is a hard day for everybody in this league.”

Mahomes’ approach to the toughest part of the preseason is a sign of his leadership ability, which has been proven time and again during his tenure as Kansas City’s starting quarterback.

He, along with all of Chiefs Kingdom, will have to wait to see how things shake out next week to know who he will take the field with against the Detroit Lions in Kansas City’s 2023 season kickoff in September.
