MVP Patrick Mahomes led a superb late fightback as the Kansas City Chiefs ended their 50-year Super Bowl drought with a 31-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Miami.
The 2018 NFL regular-season MVP threw touchdowns to star tight end Travis Kelce and running back Damien Williams - who also made sure of success with a last-gasp TD burst down the sideline - as Andy Reid's side rallied to overturn a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit at Hard Rock Stadium.
Mahomes had earlier rushed for a touchdown before tossing two interceptions on a dramatic, topsy-turvy night that saw the Chiefs seal only their second Super Bowl title and first since 1970.
The 49ers struck first in Miami, with Robbie Gould kicking a 38-yard field goal on their opening possession after an explosive 32-yard end-around run from rookie wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
However, the Chiefs ended the opening quarter on top as Mahomes bundled into the endzone at the culmination of a lengthy drive.
They extended that advantage with a Harrison Butker field goal midway through the second quarter after cornerback Bashaud Breeland had intercepted Jimmy Garoppolo, only for the 49ers to make it all square at the interval as an effective 80-yard drive was finished by a 15-yard touchdown pass to full-back Kyle Juszczyk.
After an electric half-time performance from Shakira and Jennifer Lopez, Gould pushed the Niners ahead once more from 42 yards after Garoppolo failed to spot wide-open tight end George Kittle on third down.
Mahomes was picked off by linebacker Fred Warner while trying to find speedy receiver Tyreek Hill and San Francisco took full advantage, with running back Raheem Mostert - who starred in the demolition of the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game a fortnight ago - rushing home for the fifth time in just two matches.
The Niners looked to be closing in on a record-equalling sixth Super Bowl win, especially when Mahomes was sacked by DeForest Buckner and then intercepted for the second time after the ball deflected off the hand of Hill and into the path of cornerback Tavarius Moore.
However, the never-say-die Chiefs rallied in fine style for the third consecutive game, with Mahomes unleashing a 44-yard pass to Hill on third-and-15 - arguably the play of the night - before a crucial pass interference call on Moore on the next third down as he challenged Kelce in the endzone.
Mahomes targeted Kelce again to make it a three-point game and, after the 49ers went three and out on their next possession, Williams just about got the ball over the line in the right corner, with the go-ahead touchdown standing after a lengthy review.
With the 49ers' lead wiped out, Garoppolo agonisingly overthrew receiver Emmanuel Sanders with a third-and-long before being sacked on fourth down by defensive end Frank Clark.
The Chiefs then finished with a flourish as Williams raced 38 yards down the left sideline to score again and cornerback Kendall Fuller intercepted a last-gasp desperation heave from Garoppolo.
Delight for Kansas City and for Reid, one of the most highly-respected offensive minds in the NFL who had waited 21 years for a Super Bowl ring.
For opposite number Kyle Shanahan, however, the misery on the biggest stage continued as the offensive co-ordinator during the Atlanta Falcons' heartbreaking Super Bowl LI loss to the New England Patriots in 2017 was powerless to prevent another advantage being frittered away at the last.
