Patrick Mahomes Has Blunt Assessment of His Own Performance Amid Early Struggles of Receivers

Even though the Chiefs are 3–1 to start the season, the offense admittedly has had its issues.

The reigning Super Bowl champions have taken some time to click as a unit on offense, especially after their Week 1 loss to the Lions. Wide receiver Kadarius Toney caught a lot of heat specifically for dropping four attempted passes through four weeks.

Despite the receivers bearing the brunt of criticism so far this season, quarterback Patrick Mahomes took the blame for the offense’s struggles.

“I just haven’t played very good to start the season,” Mahomes said during Wednesday’s press conference, via NFL Media. “So I think if I start playing better, everybody will start playing better.”

It sounds like the reigning NFL MVP is determined to work on his performance, too.

“You just come in every single day and work and try to continue to get better and usually that stuff kind of figures itself out,” Mahomes said. “I’ve had spots like this in my career where I haven’t had the best few weeks in a row and so I have to make sure that I can go back to the fundamentals and try to be better for the team and then rely on other guys to make plays. I think that’s somewhere where I can be better, is just getting the ball out of my hands and let these other guys make plays.”

Mahomes has completed 64.3% of his passes for 1,006 yards, which ranks 10th in the NFL. He’s also thrown eight touchdowns and four interceptions.
