Patrick Mahomes had the worst day back on the job after his honeymoon

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Getting married is fun. Weddings are a blast. There’s usually an open bar, which is always great. You get to celebrate with old friends and family and then leave town for a bit and forget about life for a while on your honeymoon.

The end of honeymoon is tough, though. All those days and months of planning your wedding are over, the bars are no longer free, and it’s time to get back to work and back to the grind that is normal day-to-day life.

It stinks.

Patrick Mahomes knows what I’m talking about because he got back to work yesterday after getting married earlier this month in Hawaii. He and his wife, Brittany, then had their honeymoon in the Caribbean and it all looked like a very nice time.

Yesterday the Chiefs QB posted a picture on his Instagram stories of him working out and getting back to business. The Chiefs want to get back to the Super Bowl again after losing in the AFC title game a few months ago and their QB is serious about leading the way.

But his first day back didn’t go as planned because yesterday afternoon the Chiefs pulled a stunner and traded wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins for a bunch of draft picks. Hill was a game-changer for Mahomes and the Chiefs. His speed put a ton of pressure on defenses and opened the field up for the rest of Kansas City’s explosive offense. He and Mahomes were magical together and teamed up for so many huge plays.

Now Hill’s gone and Mahomes can’t be to happy about that. Talk about a rough welcome back to the real world.

The loss of Hill could be a devastating one for the Chiefs. Sure, they still have Travis Kelce and they recently signed former Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, but there isn’t another WR in the league like Hill, who Mahomes seemingly could always turn to in crucial moments, like when they needed a big play late in their Super Bowl win over the 49ers a few years ago.

Speaking of the Super Bowl – Mahomes is now learning that getting rings isn’t an easy thing to do. After beating the 49ers it felt like the Chiefs would start racking up championships. Instead, they lost to Tom Brady and the Bucs in Super Bowl 55 and lost to the Bengals at home in the AFC title game last January.

Winning in the NFL isn’t easy and now that is going to get a lot tougher for Mahomes and the Chiefs, who no longer have one of their best weapons. Also, the AFC has gotten ridiculously stacked this offseason and the AFC West is likely going to be the toughest division in all of football.

Life came at Mahomes – and all Chiefs fans – pretty fast yesterday and now it’s time to really get back to work.

Welcome back to the job, dude!
